The New Life in Christ (EPH 4:17-32)

[4:17] In the Lord's name, then, I warn you: do not continue to live like the heathen, whose thoughts are worthless

[4:18] and whose minds are in the dark. They have no part in the life that God gives, for they are completely ignorant and stubborn.

[4:19] They have lost all feeling of shame; they give themselves over to vice and do all sorts of indecent things without restraint.

[4:20] That was not what you learned about Christ!

[4:21] You certainly heard about him, and as his followers you were taught the truth that is in Jesus.

[4:22] So get rid of your old self, which made you live as you used to—the old self that was being destroyed by its deceitful desires.

[4:23] Your hearts and minds must be made completely new,

[4:24] and you must put on the new self, which is created in God's likeness and reveals itself in the true life that is upright and holy.

[4:25] No more lying, then! Each of you must tell the truth to the other believer, because we are all members together in the body of Christ.

[4:26] If you become angry, do not let your anger lead you into sin, and do not stay angry all day.

[4:27] Don't give the Devil a chance.

[4:28] If you used to rob, you must stop robbing and start working, in order to earn an honest living for yourself and to be able to help the poor.

[4:29] Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you.

[4:30] And do not make God's Holy Spirit sad; for the Spirit is God's mark of ownership on you, a guarantee that the Day will come when God will set you free.

[4:31] Get rid of all bitterness, passion, and anger. No more shouting or insults, no more hateful feelings of any sort.

[4:32] Instead, be kind and tender-hearted to one another, and forgive one another, as God has forgiven you through Christ.

Living in the Light (EPH 5:1-20)

[5:1] Since you are God's dear children, you must try to be like him.

[5:2] Your life must be controlled by love, just as Christ loved us and gave his life for us as a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice that pleases God.

[5:3] Since you are God's people, it is not right that any matters of sexual immorality or indecency or greed should even be mentioned among you.

[5:4] Nor is it fitting for you to use language which is obscene, profane, or vulgar. Rather you should give thanks to God.

[5:5] You may be sure that no one who is immoral, indecent, or greedy (for greed is a form of idolatry) will ever receive a share in the Kingdom of Christ and of God.

[5:6] Do not let anyone deceive you with foolish words; it is because of these very things that God's anger will come upon those who do not obey him.

[5:7] So have nothing at all to do with such people.

[5:8] You yourselves used to be in the darkness, but since you have become the Lord's people, you are in the light. So you must live like people who belong to the light,

[5:9] for it is the light that brings a rich harvest of every kind of goodness, righteousness, and truth.

[5:10] Try to learn what pleases the Lord.

[5:11] Have nothing to do with the worthless things that people do, things that belong to the darkness. Instead, bring them out to the light. (

[5:12] It is really too shameful even to talk about the things they do in secret.)

[5:13] And when all things are brought out to the light, then their true nature is clearly revealed;

[5:14] for anything that is clearly revealed becomes light. That is why it is said, “Wake up, sleeper, and rise from death, and Christ will shine on you.”

[5:15] So be careful how you live. Don't live like ignorant people, but like wise people.

[5:16] Make good use of every opportunity you have, because these are evil days.

[5:17] Don't be fools, then, but try to find out what the Lord wants you to do.

[5:18] Do not get drunk with wine, which will only ruin you; instead, be filled with the Spirit.

[5:19] Speak to one another with the words of psalms, hymns, and sacred songs; sing hymns and psalms to the Lord with praise in your hearts.

[5:20] In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, always give thanks for everything to God the Father.

Wives and Husbands (EPH 5:21-33)

[5:21] Submit yourselves to one another because of your reverence for Christ.

[5:22] Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands as to the Lord.

[5:23] For a husband has authority over his wife just as Christ has authority over the church; and Christ is himself the Savior of the church, his body.

[5:24] And so wives must submit themselves completely to their husbands just as the church submits itself to Christ.

[5:25] Husbands, love your wives just as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it.

[5:26] He did this to dedicate the church to God by his word, after making it clean by washing it in water,

[5:27] in order to present the church to himself in all its beauty—pure and faultless, without spot or wrinkle or any other imperfection.

[5:28] Men ought to love their wives just as they love their own bodies. A man who loves his wife loves himself. (

[5:29] None of us ever hate our own bodies. Instead, we feed them, and take care of them, just as Christ does the church;

[5:30] for we are members of his body.)

[5:31] As the scripture says, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and unite with his wife, and the two will become one.”

[5:32] There is a deep secret truth revealed in this scripture, which I understand as applying to Christ and the church.

[5:33] But it also applies to you: every husband must love his wife as himself, and every wife must respect her husband.

Children and Parents (EPH 6:1-4)

[6:1] Children, it is your Christian duty to obey your parents, for this is the right thing to do.

[6:2] “Respect your father and mother” is the first commandment that has a promise added:

[6:3] “so that all may go well with you, and you may live a long time in the land.”

[6:4] Parents, do not treat your children in such a way as to make them angry. Instead, raise them with Christian discipline and instruction.

Slaves and Masters (EPH 6:5-9)

[6:5] Slaves, obey your human masters with fear and trembling; and do it with a sincere heart, as though you were serving Christ.

[6:6] Do this not only when they are watching you, because you want to gain their approval; but with all your heart do what God wants, as slaves of Christ.

[6:7] Do your work as slaves cheerfully, as though you served the Lord, and not merely human beings.

[6:8] Remember that the Lord will reward each of us, whether slave or free, for the good work we do.

[6:9] Masters, behave in the same way toward your slaves and stop using threats. Remember that you and your slaves belong to the same Master in heaven, who judges everyone by the same standard.

The Whole Armor of God (EPH 6:10-20)

[6:10] Finally, build up your strength in union with the Lord and by means of his mighty power.

[6:11] Put on all the armor that God gives you, so that you will be able to stand up against the Devil's evil tricks.

[6:12] For we are not fighting against human beings but against the wicked spiritual forces in the heavenly world, the rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers of this dark age.

[6:13] So put on God's armor now! Then when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist the enemy's attacks; and after fighting to the end, you will still hold your ground.

[6:14] So stand ready, with truth as a belt tight around your waist, with righteousness as your breastplate,

[6:15] and as your shoes the readiness to announce the Good News of peace.

[6:16] At all times carry faith as a shield; for with it you will be able to put out all the burning arrows shot by the Evil One.

[6:17] And accept salvation as a helmet, and the word of God as the sword which the Spirit gives you.

[6:18] Do all this in prayer, asking for God's help. Pray on every occasion, as the Spirit leads. For this reason keep alert and never give up; pray always for all God's people.

[6:19] And pray also for me, that God will give me a message when I am ready to speak, so that I may speak boldly and make known the gospel's secret.

[6:20] For the sake of this gospel I am an ambassador, though now I am in prison. Pray that I may be bold in speaking about the gospel as I should.

Final Greetings (EPH 6:21-24)

[6:21] Tychicus, our dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord's work, will give you all the news about me, so that you may know how I am getting along.

[6:22] That is why I am sending him to you—to tell you how all of us are getting along and to encourage you.

[6:23] May God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give to all Christians peace and love with faith.

[6:24] May God's grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with undying love.

Paul's Prayer for His Readers (PHP 1:3-11)

[1:3] I thank my God for you every time I think of you;

[1:4] and every time I pray for you all, I pray with joy

[1:5] because of the way in which you have helped me in the work of the gospel from the very first day until now.

[1:6] And so I am sure that God, who began this good work in you, will carry it on until it is finished on the Day of Christ Jesus.

[1:7] You are always in my heart! And so it is only right for me to feel as I do about you. For you have all shared with me in this privilege that God has given me, both now that I am in prison and also while I was free to defend the gospel and establish it firmly.

[1:8] God is my witness that I tell the truth when I say that my deep feeling for you all comes from the heart of Christ Jesus himself.

[1:9] I pray that your love will keep on growing more and more, together with true knowledge and perfect judgment,

[1:10] so that you will be able to choose what is best. Then you will be free from all impurity and blame on the Day of Christ.

[1:11] Your lives will be filled with the truly good qualities which only Jesus Christ can produce, for the glory and praise of God.

To Live Is Christ (PHP 1:12-30)

[1:12] I want you to know, my friends, that the things that have happened to me have really helped the progress of the gospel.

[1:13] As a result, the whole palace guard and all the others here know that I am in prison because I am a servant of Christ.

[1:14] And my being in prison has given most of the believers more confidence in the Lord, so that they grow bolder all the time to preach the message fearlessly.

[1:15] Of course some of them preach Christ because they are jealous and quarrelsome, but others from genuine good will.

[1:16] These do so from love, because they know that God has given me the work of defending the gospel.

[1:17] The others do not proclaim Christ sincerely, but from a spirit of selfish ambition; they think that they will make more trouble for me while I am in prison.

[1:18] It does not matter! I am happy about it—just so Christ is preached in every way possible, whether from wrong or right motives. And I will continue to be happy,

[1:19] because I know that by means of your prayers and the help which comes from the Spirit of Jesus Christ I shall be set free.

[1:20] My deep desire and hope is that I shall never fail in my duty, but that at all times, and especially right now, I shall be full of courage, so that with my whole being I shall bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die.

[1:21] For what is life? To me, it is Christ. Death, then, will bring more.

[1:22] But if by continuing to live I can do more worthwhile work, then I am not sure which I should choose.

[1:23] I am pulled in two directions. I want very much to leave this life and be with Christ, which is a far better thing;

[1:24] but for your sake it is much more important that I remain alive.

[1:25] I am sure of this, and so I know that I will stay. I will stay on with you all, to add to your progress and joy in the faith,

[1:26] so that when I am with you again, you will have even more reason to be proud of me in your life in union with Christ Jesus.

[1:27] Now, the important thing is that your way of life should be as the gospel of Christ requires, so that, whether or not I am able to go and see you, I will hear that you are standing firm with one common purpose and that with only one desire you are fighting together for the faith of the gospel.

[1:28] Don't be afraid of your enemies; always be courageous, and this will prove to them that they will lose and that you will win, because it is God who gives you the victory.

[1:29] For you have been given the privilege of serving Christ, not only by believing in him, but also by suffering for him.

[1:30] Now you can take part with me in the battle. It is the same battle you saw me fighting in the past, and as you hear, the one I am fighting still.
